About me
Course Title: UAL L3 Performing Arts
Interviewer: Ella Botton
Interviewee: Leah Bradshaw
What performing arts skills and abilities do you have? What can you bring to the course?
I am confident and comfortable whilst on stage and I have a passion for performing. I have trained since an early age in singing, acting and dancing.
I feel as though I can bring positivity to the course and a keen willingness to learn and improve.
Singing rating- 6.5/10
Dance rating- 4/10
Acting rating- 5/10
Performance skills- 6/10
Where have you demonstrated these in the past?
I have had lead roles in amateur productions such as School of Rock and Hairspray where I learnt to improvise around different situations while on stage to keep the production flowing. I also took part in numerous singing competitions at my previous school including the classical music competition and the popular music competition. I took part in the National Theatre Project at my school taking the role of Brid in 'Ceasefire Babies'. My biggest accomplishment, however, would be when I sung a solo at the Royal Albert Hall as part of an event called 'Prom Praise for Schools' directed by Noel Treddenick.
What do you consider to be your strongest skills and which need most improvement?
I would consider my strongest skills to be my singing technique and my previous knowledge of ballet and dance. I would like to improve my breath control, ability to pick up choreography and my stamina so I can keep a consistent energy through dances.
What particular practical/technical skills would you like to work on/gain/improve?
I would like to improve my knowledge of how to work with space when devising to portray a particular message. I would also like to be more aware of my body language when performing.
How would you assess your study skills and essay writing skills?
I am confident with essay writing and academic work as in my GCSE's I achieved an 8 in English and an 8 in Maths. I would also consider myself to be organised and punctual.
What are your ambitions for a future career or study at the end of your course?
After I have completed this course I plan to audition for a performing arts university such as Arts Ed or Mountview where I hope to get a degree in Musical Theatre. After this I would like to pursue a career in the arts.
What skills and behaviours will you need to use to achieve your future goals and how will you get them?
I will need to be hardworking, driven, confident and humble.
TERM 1 REFLECTION
What skills and experience have you improves, developed or gained over the first term?
Over the Christmas holidays I took part in a pantomime held at the shaw theatre as a member of one of the dance teams and I completed a full run involving doing a show every other day. Through doing this my confidence in my dance ability is a lot higher and I feel I can pick choreography up a lot quicker than I previously could. I also put myself forward for a difficult dance audition at my performing company where I had to focus very hard to be able to keep up however this pushed me and although I was not successful I feel as though this will help me when I am auditioning for universities next year. I have noticed and been told in my ballet lessons outside college that my turnout has really improved, I also feel that I have a lot more strength in my legs.
Where do you think you have best demonstrated these?
When doing ballet exercises at the bar I feel that my placement has improved and I have stopped rolling my feet which was a note I was previously given as something to improve on. Ive also noticed that when learning new dance routines I am able to keep up where I may not have been able to before.
What skills or achievements are you most pleased with?
During last term in college, I re-auditioned to become part of the elite musical theatre troupe at Spirit Young Performers Company and was successful. Since beginning training I have found myself to be more motivated and driven to improve both my dance and singing technique.
What do you consider to be your strongest skill and what needs most improvement?
I would consider my strongest attribute to be my performance skills (e.g the way I deliver a dance piece/ singing piece whilst on stage) however I have noticed through acting classes that my acting skills have most room for improvement which is a goal I would like to work towards throughout the coming term.
Are there any skills you would like to work on/ improve?
I have noticed through my singing BTEC certificate that I am not as versatile in my singing as I would like to be. I am aware in the world of performing arts that being versatile is very useful so this is another thing I would like to work towards. I also would like to start spending more time developing my singing technique as I consider this to be my strongest out of the 3 skills.
Has anything changed in terms of your ambitions for a future career or study since you began the course?
My plans for the future aren't different from before however I am aware just how much work I will need to put in to achieve my goals for the near future.

UNIT 7 REFLECTION QUESTIONS
1. At the beginning of the course, you talked about your performing arts experiences before coming on to the college. What other skills and experiences have you improved, developed or gained over the past 2 terms?
I have begun to really improve my dance technique and overall confidence in dance. My organisation skills have begun to develop as I am preparing for unit 8 and I feel confident that I will be able to stay on top of work.
Give yourself a number from 1-10 for each of your singing__7__ dance__6__ acting__5__ and performance__8__ skills after the first term.
|
2. Where do you think you have best demonstrated these?
I have demonstrated these skills both in lessons and performances however I feel that in Ballet and Jazz classes I am particularly excelling in the skills area. My organisation skills can be seen in my work as I have kept on top of all my logs and research tasks as well as consistently referencing the sources I have used in the Harvard format.
|
3. Where have you gained new experience? (eg; designing lighting, props, costumes, choreographing/directing)
Throughout the process of putting together ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ I gained new experience in lighting, staging, props, choreographing and directed as shown in my additional roles during these units. I have gained confidence in my ability to choreograph as I worked with Tilia to choreograph the number ‘Prologue’.
|
4. What do you consider are your current strengths /strongest skills? Where have you demonstrated these this term?
My strongest skill is my performance as I feel this is when I am most comfortable and passionate however I also believe that my dance and singing skills are strong. I have demonstrated these in all the performances over the year and in dance technique classes as well as singing classes.
|
5. What are your progression aims in terms of further H.E training/study or work? What skills will you need in order to achieve these?
I plan to progress into the second year of this course, to do this I will need to gain at least a merit grade in Unit 8 and I will have to pass units 1-6 confidently. On completion of this course I would like to apply to performing arts colleges to get a degree in musical theatre.
|
6. Are there any other skills you would like to work on/ gain/ improve? ( e.g production skills etc)
I would be interested to learn more about costume and makeup as I progress into units 7&8 however the main skill I would like to improve is my choreographing skills.
|
7. What are your weaker points? Reflecting on your progress in term 2 class work and performance, what skills do you need to work to develop and improve in order to achieve your aims?
My weaker points include my acting skills and vocal projection. I will strive to improve both of these when moving into unit 8 through paying extra attention to these particular skills.
|
Additional notes
Units 1-6 have been very successful for me so I would like to bring all the skills and knowledge I have from these projects and bring them forward into unit 8 to deliver a successful and engaging performance.
|
To help me towards my goal of a Performing Arts career I have also pursued the follow External Development / Training opportunities:
· Member of Spirit Young Performers Company – training every Sunday
· Christmas Holidays 2018 – Performed in Panto at The Shaw Theatre
· Easter Holidays 2019 – Work Experience with KUDOS television Production Company
· Weekly external additional singing and ballet lessons
